All Aboard Moving Ahead with Private Passenger Rail Plan

December 18, 2012 | WMFE- The private company behind the proposed All Aboard Florida rail service got the green light to move forward on its passenger rail plans between Orlando and Miami Tuesday. The project includes laying about 40 miles of rail from Cocoa to Orlando International Airport.

The last leg of the one billion dollar rail service would follow the 528 expressway, along rights of way owned by the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority and the Florida Department of Transportation

On Tuesday the department gave Florida East Coast Industries the go ahead to negotiate lease agreements for those rights of way.

DoT procurement manager Carla Perry says the company was the only one to submit a proposal.

“At this point the next step is for the two, the OOCEA and the DoT to finalize the lease agreements, we will actually negotiate the lease agreements,” said Perry.

Florida East Coast Industries already owns 200 miles of track along the proposed route.

The company wants to start the All Aboard Florida service by 2015.
