Metroplan Gives Maglev Rail Proposal Conditional Approval  Image: AMT Inc. December 12, 2012 | WMFE- Orlando's regional transportation planning agency has given its approval to a plan to link Orlando Airport to the Orange County Convention Center with a magnetic levitation railway. The privately financed 15 mile system proposed by Georgia Based American Maglev Technology Incorporated would cost $315 million dollars to build. The first phase of the project would run on an elevated track between the airport and the Convention Center / International Drive. Future extensions are proposed to serve the Medical City area and stations in the Osceola Parkway corridor. A report prepared by Metroplan Orlando staff recommended accepting the proposal but it’s conditional on a favorable report from the Maglev technical assessment being sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation. Other conditions include addressing any concerns raised about right of way, alignment issues, and revenue diversion. The Metroplan board voted unanimously Wednesday to accept the staff recommendation. |
