Sept 24, 2012 | WMFE - A new public opinion poll finds the presidential race is a dead heat in Florida 43 days before the November election.

The poll, which was conducted by the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald and the Tampa Bay Times, found President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney locked in a virtual tie in the state.

The president has the support of 48 percent of likely voters' while Romney has 47 percent. That's well within the 3.5 percent margin of error. Only four percent of the voters polled said they were undecided.

The respondents gave President Obama a higher rating for his handling foreign policy by six percentage points over Mr. Romney.

He also holds onto a substantial lead among likely Hispanic voters and he has the support of independents who back Obama by 51 to 40 percent over Romney.

Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans in Florida, and pollsters say, independent voters will likely be the key to wining the state’s 29 electoral votes in November.

41 percent say they are better off than they were four years ago while 51 percent of those polled say they're not.

The Mason-Dixon poll of 800 likely Florida voters was conducted from September 17th through the 19th.
