September 21, 2012 | WMFE -The unemployment rate dropped in central Florida in August with the leisure and hospitality industry leading the way in job creation. The statewide jobless rate remained the same as in July.

The August unemployment rate dropped to 8.6 percent in the Orlando metro region, down from 9.1 percent the previous month and more than two points lower than the 10.7 percent rate in August of last year.

Metro Orlando gained more nonagricultural jobs over the year than any other region and central Florida led the state in year-to-year gains in hotel and restaurant industry jobs.

The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metro Region gained more than 26,000 jobs during the year, 9500 of them in leisure and hospitality.

The statewide unemployment rate remained stalled at 8.8 percent for August, the same rate as in July. The State Department of Economic Opportunity says more than 818,000 Floridians were out of work in August.
