Bill Would Deny Federal Aid to Students Convicted of Hazing  September 21, 2012 | WMFE - South Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson has filed a bill that would ban financial aid for students convicted of hazing. Wilson unveiled the proposal at a press conference outside the Capitol in Washington on Wednesday. She also proposed legislation that would deny federal highway money to states that fail to enact anti-hazing laws. The Democrat from Miami Gardens says hazing is not limited to traditionally black colleges such as Florida A&M University.She points to Florida’s anti-hazing law which was crafted after the death of a University of Miami student. Wilson says schools share responsibility when students are injured or killed. “If what happens in real life in the world, if it happens on a college campus, it’s hazing.” Wilson said. “But if it happens in the real world, it’s murder.” Wilson was joined at the news conference by the parents of Robert Champion, the 26-year-old FAMU marching band drum major died after a hazing ritual aboard the band bus in Orlando last year. |
