Space Shuttle Endeavour Prepares to Leave Cape Canaveral

Sept 13, 2012 | WMFE - Space shuttle Endeavour has just a few days left to call Cape Canaveral home. The orbiter is about to make its final journey, but it will not be blasting off under its own steam.

At sunrise Monday, Endeavour will depart NASA's Kennedy Space Center for California, with stops in Texas. The retired shuttle will be bolted to the top of a modified jumbo jet for the four-day trip to Los Angeles.

Endeavour is the second of NASA's three space shuttles to head to a museum. Discovery landed at the Smithsonian Institution's display hangar in Virginia last spring. Endeavour is bound for the California Science Center. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy Space Center and take up residence in the facility’s Visitor Complex.

Before reaching Los Angeles, Endeavour will spend almost two days at Ellington Field near NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Johnson Space Center is home to NASA’s Mission Control.
