FDLE Finds FAMU Kept Faulty Records on Famed Marching Band

Sept 12, 2012 | WMFE - State investigators are concluding that Florida A&M University did not keep track of expenses and finances for its famed "Marching 100" band. The investigation was launched in the wake of the fatal hazing of drum major Robert Champion, who died from a brutal hazing-related beating after last November's Florida Classic game in Orlando.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Wednesday released a scathing four-page report that concluded there was little oversight or control over many of the university’s expenses related to the marching band.

For example, the report says no one at the school seriously looked into a theft of marching band dues from 2007. Investigators also discovered that FAMU alumni and non-university students received band per-diem payments for out-of-town trips.

The state probe has already resulted in the arrest of FAMU's events director, Tammy Hamlet. She’s facing eight misdemeanor counts for travel expense and per-diem fraud charges.
