Democratic National Convention Starts but Will Candidates Benefit?

Sept 4, 2012 | WMFE - With democrats starting their convention today and the Republican National Convention finished pundits are speculating over how much political capital the presidential candidates will get from the events. 90.7s Mark Simpson reports both sides claim an advantage, while a new poll shows it might all be a moot point.

After a well organized RNC in Tampa last week former GOP Congressman Lou Frey says President Obama’s re-lection bid is not so certain: "I think you’re going to see a big bump from the way this was handled, and that bump is going to be a serious problem to Obama.  They’re nervous.”

Meanwhile as democrats prepare to kick off their own convention in Charlotte, former democratic state house representative Dick Batchelor claims President Obama will gain an advantage by  jumping past republicans: “well the fact is, if you go second you can mitigate the first bump and you can hopefully get your own bump coming of the convention.”

And as the parties spar, a new Public Policy Poll shows that the RNC had virtually no impact on Mitt Romney’s Florida numbers. 

33% of voters said they were more likely after the Convention to vote Republican, 33% percent said it made them less likely and 34% said it didn’t make a difference either way.
