Flooding from Isaac Remains in South Florida

September 3, 2012 | WMFE - Even though Florida did not take a direct hit from Hurricane Isaac, the storm had an unexpected impact on parts of the state. South Florida is still dealing with the history-making flood waters that Isaac left behind.

Randy Smith of the South Florida Water Management District says the flooding was a surprise in both amount and location.

“For portions of the district, it was pretty overwhelming," says Smith. "We initially thought that Miami-Dade and Broward were going to be the hardest hit, but as it turns out, western Palm Beach County received what we consider a 1-in-100-year storm event, with 15 to 20 inches of rain in some isolated areas, which really created some flooding problems for us.”

Smith says water management workers are still running emergency pumps 24 hours a day to reduce the flooding in west Palm Beach County. He says they’ve moved more than 25 billion gallons of water already from the streets into the ocean, but there are still pockets of flooding across the area.
