Federal Judge Plans to Bar Parts of Florida's New Election Law

August 29, 2012 | WMFE - A federal judge says he will issue a permanent injunction against the part of Florida's new election law that restricts voter registration drives. US District Judge Robert Hinkle announced Wednesday that he is only waiting for an appellate court to send the case back to him.

Judge Hinkle had ordered a temporary injunction on May 31st, prohibiting Florida from enforcing a new requirement that voter registration forms must be submitted to election officials within 48 hours of being signed. Instead, the ruling restored a previous ten-day deadline.

The state of Florida began an appeal process after that injunction, but ended up reaching a settlement with the civic groups that had challenged the registration drive restrictions. The state and plaintiffs jointly requested the permanent injunction.

The plaintiffs included the League of Women Voters and Rock the Vote.
