11am Update: Tropical Storm Isaac Continues to Strengthen and Move North

August 22, 2012 | WMFE - Tropical Storm Isaac is gaining strength and heading toward the Leeward Islands. In its latest update at 11:00 this morning, the National Hurricane Center in Miami shows the center of Isaac located near the Lesser Antilles moving west at about 21 mph with maximum sustained winds of nearly 50 mph.

Forecasters expect Isaac to move across the Leeward Islands tonight then pass south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Thursday.
The forecasters say the system could strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane by the time it approaches the Dominican Republic Thursday night.
The Hurricane Center’s five day prediction shows several possible tracks including one that has Isaac moving into South Florida Monday as a Category 1 hurricane.

Other models show it moving farther west into the Gulf of Mexico then either north through the Gulf or west toward the Yucatan Peninsula. Still other projections have the storm moving farther east into the Atlantic.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for: Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin, St. Kitts, and Antigua. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Puerto Rico, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and the Southern Coast of the Dominican Republic.
