Scott Cheered at Conservative Meeting, Tapped to Speak at RNC

August 06, 2012 | WMFE - Gov. Rick Scott was enthusiastically received over the weekend at a gathering of conservative activists organized by the RedState web blog and has just been named as one of the speakers at the upcoming Republican National Convention.

Gov. Scott spoke to the RedState annual gathering in Jacksonville Saturday about the policies he's put in place since taking office, ranging from drug testing welfare recipients to stripping teachers of tenure. He also said his pro-business policies are helping to create jobs in Florida.

Scott joked about the numerous lawsuits filed by groups opposing his agenda saying, "If you do conservative things in Florida, you get sued."

The governor said Florida needs a better federal partner and that this year's election is important, but he didn't specifically mention likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

That will likely change when he delivers another high profile speech later this month.

Gov. Scott has been named as one of the speakers at the Republican National Convention in Tampa during the last week of August.

Other well-known Republicans John McCain, Mike Huckabee and Condoleezza Rice are among the first speakers announced for the GOP's nominating convention.

Governor Scott will join other Republican governors speaking at the convention. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, Governor Susana Martinez of New Mexico and Ohio's Governor John Kasich will each take a turn at the podium.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is expected to formally accept his party's nomination for president to cap the event.
