Central Florida Hispanic Jobless Rate is Second Highest

July 4, 2012 | WMFE - A new report shows the Orlando region has the second highest rate of Hispanic unemployment in the nation. The most recent unemployment rate for Hispanics in Orlando is 16 point 6 per cent, double the rate for non-Hispanic residents.

The Economic Policy Institute, a Washington based, pro-labor, think tank produced the report. It says the continuing slump in Central Florida's construction industry is a major factor behind the discouraging numbers. Other related industries such as landscaping and building maintenance were also affected by the construction downturn.

Other areas in the Northeast and Southwest US saw their Hispanic jobless rates drop since last year’s report but the figure was up slightly in the Orlando area. Only Providence, Rhode Island had a higher Hispanic jobless rate at 23 percent.
