Florida Gets $9.1 Million Bonus for Food Stamp Program Accuracy

July 2, 2012 | WMFE - Florida is getting a $9.1 million bonus from the federal government because of how the state is running its food stamp program.

The Department of Children and Families announced Monday that the federal government has awarded the state a bonus for the fifth year in a row. DCF officials say that Florida's error rate of .87 was the second lowest in the nation behind Alaska.

State agencies across the country are required each year to review a statistical sample of households receiving benefits, and double-check if each of those households is actually eligible for benefits and whether the amount they’re getting is appropriate.

In May, there were approximately 3.4 million people receiving food stamps in Florida.
