More Red Light Cameras Coming to Orange County

June 19, 2012 | WMFE - Orange County leaders have voted to open up bidding for the building of more red light cameras at accident-prone intersections across the area. County commissioners want to put up dozens of new cameras over the next two years.

There are ten red-light cameras operating in Orange County right now, but on Tuesday, commissioners approved a plan that calls for 80 more by the end of 2014. The plan opens up bidding for construction and maintenance of the new cameras.

Supporters maintain that red-light cameras are aimed at changing drivers’ behavior, saying motorists will drive more safely and run fewer red lights if there are more cameras. Critics say the cameras are just a way for local governments to make money.

Right now in Orange County, red-light runners get fined about $160. Nearly 20,000 of those violations have been recorded since the cameras went live last year.

County officials say they divide the money with the state and the companies that run the cameras. They say the county’s portion of the proceeds, about $400,000 so far, is slated for pedestrian and driver safety programs.
