Beryl Becomes Tropical Storm, Stays on Track for Jacksonville Area

May 27, 2012 | WMFE - The National Hurricane Center has renamed Beryl a tropical storm. It is expected to bring bands of heavy rains and gusty winds to Central Florida as it makes landfall near Jacksonville later Sunday evening.

The system is churning about 100 miles off the Flagler County coastline.

Tropical storm warnings cover Florida's coast down to the Volusia/Brevard County line. Inland Volusia County is also under a tropical storm warning.

Beryl is moving toward the coast at 10 miles per hour, packing wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour.

Current tracks show the storm making a landfall near Jacksonville late Sunday evening, and weakening as it moves west-northwest across land.

The Orlando area is not expected to feel much impact beyond fast-moving bands of heavy rain and gusty winds.
