Zimmerman's Attorney to Ask Judge to Delay Public Release of Evidence

The attorney for George Zimmerman says public release of evidence in the murder case should be delayed so that the names of witnesses can be removed. He says he intends to ask a judge on Monday to delay the release.

Defense Attorney Mark O'Mara said on his website Friday that he expects to receive evidence from state prosecutors on Monday. Under Florida law, that would normally be made public at the same time. But O'Mara says he will file a motion asking the judge to delay the public release of the documents so that witness names can be blacked out.

O'Mara says he fears for the safety of the witnesses and, he says, if witnesses are harassed it could jeopardize his client's chances of getting a fair trial.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood crime watch volunteer, claims self defense in the shooting and has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the February shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
