Last Bandmember Charged in FAMU Hazing Death Turns Herself In

The last of eleven people charged with felony hazing in the death of Florida A&M University drum major Robert Champion has been arrested.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said 20-year old Lasherry Codner surrendered to authorities at the Orange County jail on Sunday.

She and ten other members of FAMU’s famed marching 100 band face the most serious of the hazing charges for allegedly beating Champion on a charter bus in Orlando after the Florida Classic football game last fall.

The charge of hazing resulting in death is punishable by up to six years in prison.

Two other people face misdemeanor counts.

Champion’s death brought attention to what his family said is a culture of hazing at the Tallahassee university, and led to calls for the Marching 100 to be disbanded.

The state university system is investigating whether FAMU officials ignored warnings about hazing.
