Orange County Cost Cutting Plan Targets HR Positions, Fire Crews

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs has laid out a plan that includes administration layoffs and reducing the size of some fire station crews. Jacobs says the move would save about four and a half million dollars a year.

The proposal includes eliminating 34 jobs in human resources, fiscal services and community and environmental services.

Some of those positions are already vacant, and affected staff will be able to apply for other county jobs.

According to a memo from Mayor Jacobs, the fire department’s operating budget is unsustainable.

A study conducted by interim fire chief James Fitzgerald recommends reducing the number of four-person engine companies across the county. Currently there are 27 four person crews, under the new plan 15 of those will be reduced to crews of three through attrition.

Jacobs says the county will retain some four person crews, and there won’t be any drop in quality or safety of the service.

The changes are set to take place in October.
