February 3, 2012 | WMFE - The issue of prison privatization has been on a fast track in the Florida Senate this session. Senate President Mike Haridopolos has made it a priority to approve a measure that would turn over about 30 correctional institutions in South Florida to private contractors.

Senate leaders say the move could save state taxpayers between 16 and 33 million dollars a year.
Earlier this week, Haridopolos removed Republican State Senator Mike Fasano from his position as chairman of the Senate Criminal Justice Subcommittee after Fasano publicly challenged senate leadership on the issue.
Dr. Roberto Hugh Potter, Director of Research and Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida, has studied prison privatization.
90.7’s Tom Parkinson asked him if the change would actually save the state millions of dollars as proponents suggest.
