Incremental Progress on Wekiva Parkway

Dec 02, 2011 | WMFE - The Florida Department of Transportation released a list of proposed changes to its work schedule from the years 2012-2017 Thursday. The proposed rescheduling of various road improvements around central Florida could make way for the proposed Wekiva Parkway to move forward if it is finalized.

Projects like adding lanes to SR 50 near Old Cheney Highway, storm water improvements around Orange County, and adding lanes to Sand Lake road could be put off for a number of years.  Some estimates calculate a dollar figure of $300 million dollars worth of projects could be put on hold if the proposal is approved.  Major roads like U.S. High way 192 in Osceola and Highway 1792 in Seminole Counties could also see their improvement timetable shifted back.

The next step in the process is for regional planning agency Metroplan Orlando to sign off on the concept.  Metroplan spokeswoman Kelly Teague said the agency could consider the FDOT list at its December 14th meeting.  A previous Metroplan meeting was cancelled partly because of lack of information about a recent funding agreement between Wekiva Parkway partners in late November.
