Republicans Arriving in Orlando for "Presidency 5" Convention

Sept. 21, 2011 | WMFE - Thousands of Republican activists, candidates and voters are arriving in Orlando for a three day forum sponsored by the Republican Party of Florida. "Presidency 5" starts Thursday at the Orange County Convention Center. It includes a televised debate among the leading GOP presidential contenders and concludes with a straw poll.

The three day event is expected to draw national attention on its first evening as the leading Republican presidential candidates meet for a live debate Thursday evening on Fox Television.
Another debate is set for Friday among the leading candidates for the GOP nomination in Florida’s US Senate race.
Orange County Republican Party Chairman Lew Oliver said the event gives rank and file party activists a chance to be part of the process rather than having their candidate chosen for them.
“This kind of participatory process where people have a chance to look in their eyes, shake their hands, listen to them personally and cast a vote in a straw poll gives those folks a sense of empowerment.” Oliver said.
The event concludes Saturday with a straw poll to determine the presidential preference of the 3500 attendees.
