State Economists to Issue Optimistic Forecast

Sept. 01, 2011 | WMFE - Gov. Rick Scott and state lawmakers are getting some good news today about the state budget. A new three-year forecast by state economists predicts that the state might avoid a budget shortfall in 2012.

The annual September forecast is required by the state constitution. This year's version says
Florida might have enough money in 2012 to meet its spending needs in areas such as health care and education and still have enough left over to put $1 billion dollars into reserves.
But economists strongly warned that the forecast is preliminary and many factors are subject to change. The forecast assumes a certain amount of growth over the next year that could be undermined if the economy takes a turn for the worse. The state's overall budget for 2011 is just over $69 billion.
