Hank Fishkind: Port of Miami May Face Stiff Competition

Aug. 02, 2011 | WMFE -The Port of Miami is embarking on a major construction project later this year to deepen its shipping channel. The port wants to accommodate the new, larger ships expected to start steaming through the Panama Canal after the canal is widened in 2014. But economic analyst Hank Fishkind says that while Miami has the US port closest to the Canal, it will face tough competition from ports farther north and closer to distribution points. 90.7's Tom Parkinson spoke with Fishkind about what the widening of the Canal will mean for Florida's ports and shipping business.
