U.S. Postal Service May Close Offices, Some in Central Florida

July 26, 2011 | WMFE - The U.S. Postal Service has announced that about 3,700 post offices nationwide may close. The agency released a list of low-traffic locations that may be shut down as a cost-cutting measure. Six of them are in Central Florida.

The post offices on the chopping block in Central Florida are sprinkled across the area. There are two in Brevard County, one in Cocoa and one in Melbourne Beach, but neighboring counties have one apiece.

An Altamonte Springs post office may close in Seminole County; in Orange County, the office in question is in Winter Garden. An Osceola County post office in Kissimmee may shut down, along with a Leesburg location in Lake County.

Officials say online options, self-service kiosks and other shipping methods have reduced the need for a physical post office. At most of the locations that may close, the agency says, employees average about two hours of work per day, and sales average less than $50 a day.
