Governor Rick Scott Embarks on Signing Tour for Pill Mill Bill

June 02, 2011 | WMFE - Governor Rick Scott is travelling the state Friday for a series of signing ceremonies drawing attention to a new bill regulating so-called "pill mills."

The legislation targets doctors and clinics who engage in illegal prescription drug trafficking. It places stricter penalties on illegal pain clinics.

Scott says he’s touring Florida to make residents aware of the efforts to crack down on pill mills. “This is a significant issue for our state and our country, and this is something that our citizens need to understand – what the bill is going to do,” says Scott. “And hopefully, it has the impact we think it’s going to have.”

The legislation also strengthens the new prescription drug database that monitors the distribution of pain medications statewide. Additionally, the bill bans doctors from giving often-abused drugs like prescription oxycodone directly to patients.

Scott will sign the pill mill bills at law enforcement locations in Orlando, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale.
