Orlando's Busy "Arterial" Roads Spell Danger for Pedestrians

May 27, 2011 | WMFE - Orlando again ranks as the nation's most dangerous area for pedestrians and bicyclists. A report released earlier from the group Transportation for America ranks the Orlando Metro area as the worst place in the country to walk, ride a bike or try to cross the street. The reports notes that pedestrians account for nearly 12 percent of total traffic deaths.

Billy Hattaway is Director of Transportation for the engineering consulting firm VHB Miller Sellan based in Orlando. He’s also a member of the Board of Directors of Bike/Walk Central Florida and was a roadway design engineer with the Florida Department of Transportation for 23 years.
Transportation engineers say part of Orlando’s problem is that it developed along a series of major arterial roadways such as State Road 436, Colonial Drive and Orange Blossom Trail.
90.7’s Tom Parkinson asked Mr. Hattaway why those kinds of roads constitute a safety hazard for pedestrians and cyclists.
