Poll: Scott's Approval Rating Slipping

May 26, 2011 | WMFE - Floridians are not too happy with their new governor according to a poll released Wednesday. Rick Scott's approval rating has dropped to a new low and respondents say they think the budget he is signing today at the Villages is "unfair."

The poll released by Quinnipiac University shows 57% of Florida voters disapprove of Governor Scott's job performance while only 29% say they approve. Even 37% of self-identified Republicans say they disapprove of how Scott is doing his job.

Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnpiac University Polling Institute, said the poll shows Scott is among the least popular governors in the country.

“Quinnipiac polls in six states, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and his numbers are the lowest of any governor in those states.” Brown said.

The poll respondents also said they don’t like the state’s budget which includes deep cuts in spending for education, health care and environmental protection. 54% of the voters polled said they thought the budget was “unfair”.

Quinnipiac’s Peter Brown said the voters seem not to have noticed that Scott kept his campaign promise not to raise taxes. “The voters who are aware of the cuts he has made to the budget are not particularly happy about it.” Brown said. “But those who might be expected to support him because he was able to balance the budget without new taxes don’t know it.”

The Quinnipiac Poll also indicated that Florida voters are not pleased with the state legislature. 56% said they disapprove of the job lawmakers are doing while only 27% approve.

Quinnipiac pollsters called 1,196 registered Florida voters between May 17th and May 24th.  The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.8 points.
