Florida Unemployment Drops to 16-Month Low

April 15, 2011 | WMFE - Florida's unemployment rate dropped to 11.1% in March. That's the lowest it's been since November 2009. The Orlando area's jobless rate was even lower, at 10.4%, down 0.4% from the previous month.

Governor Rick Scott announced the state's employment numbers Friday morning, saying the 11.1% jobless rate represents a nearly one percent decrease since he took office in January.

"We're seeing an encouraging trend, since Florida's unemployment rate has declined for three straight months," Gov. Scott said.

He said Florida still has work to do to help the more than one million people in the state who are still without work.

"I believe reducing regulation, cutting Florida's business tax, and streamlining the state's economic development function are the ways to make that happen," he said.

He called on lawmakers to implement those "core principles."
