Elementary School Eases Peanut Restrictions after Parents Protest

March 24, 2011 | WMFE - A Volusia County elementary school is backing off a few of the restrictions intended to protect a first-grade student with a life-threatening allergy to peanuts.

For example, parents were told Wednesday that students at Edgewater Elementary School no longer have to rinse their mouths with water upon arriving in the morning and again after lunch. Also, some rules restricting holiday celebrations have also been lifted.

However, students still have to wash their faces and hands when they arrive at school to make sure they don’t have any peanut residue on them.

The school eased the restrictions after parents protested outside the school, complaining the measures went too far.
