Little Change in Florida's January Jobless Rate

March 9, 2011 | WMFE - A new report says Florida's statewide unemployment rate dropped slightly in January, but there was an uptick in jobless numbers in the Orlando metro area.

The Agency for Workforce Innovation says metro Orlando saw an 11.7 percent unemployment rate, rising slightly from 11.5 percent in December.

On the state level, the report says 1.1 million Floridians are still without jobs, as the unemployment rate nudged down one-tenth of a percentage point in January to 11.9 percent.

Florida’s jobless rate is nearly three percentage points above the national average of 9 percent.

The Agency for Workforce Innovation report comes as state lawmakers move toward reducing unemployment benefits. The Florida House passed a bill today that would reduce the time an unemployed worker receives state benefits from 26 weeks to 20 weeks.

The measure would also have to pass the Senate and be signed by Governor Rick Scott before becoming law.
