Education Expert Predicts Return of Teacher Merit Pay Measure

December 17, 2010 | WMFE - When Florida's new governor, Rick Scott, takes office next month, he says education reform will be one of his top priorities. Leading state lawmakers also say they want to overhaul the public education system from top to bottom. One of their main goals is to pass some kind of teacher merit pay program.

During the last legislative session, Governor Charlie Crist joined the statewide teacher's union and many Democratic lawmakers in opposing a measure that would have linked teacher pay to student performance.
But things could change with a new governor and even more Republican lawmakers. For more on how the state's political changes might affect all aspects of the education system, 90.7's Tom Parkinson spoke with Dr. Elizabeth Heins, Professor of Education at Stetson University in DeLand and chair of the Hollis Institute for Educational Reform.
Dr. Heins says she thinks a merit pay bill will pass in the next legislative session.
