Discovery Launch Depends on NASA Meeting Today

November 24, 2010 | WMFE - NASA officials are meeting today to check the status of repairs to Space Shuttle Discovery.

Workers at Kennedy Space Center have been trying for more than two weeks to fix a gas leak and several cracks on the shuttle’s external fuel tank.  They are running tests on some of those repairs today.

The gas leak forced NASA to call off Discovery’s planned launch earlier this month.  The agency now hopes the shuttle can lift off next Friday, December 3rd.  If officials sign off on the repairs today, top NASA managers will meet on Monday to decide whether to set that as the official launch date.

The mission to the International Space Station is scheduled to be Discovery’s final flight before the shuttle program ends next year.
