Republican Crist Donors Sue for a Refund

September 21, 2010 | WMFE - Two political donors who say they contributed to Charlie Crist's Senate campaign when he was a Republican are suing to get their money back. They also say Crist should repay millions of dollars to other Republican donors now that he is running as an independent.

The plaintiffs, Linda Morton of Naples and John Rood of Jacksonville, filed the lawsuit in Collier County and are seeking class action status. Lawyers for the pair say Crist should refund all of the money his campaign received from Republican donors before he left the party in April. That amount would exceed 7 1/2 million dollars.

Collier County Circuit Judge Jack Schoonover heard arguments this morning but says he will need more time to read hundreds of pages of motions before he rules on class action status. Attorneys for the plaintiffs are also seeking a preliminary injunction to stop Crist’s campaign from spending the money until the case is resolved.

Crist's attorneys argue that a candidate’s party affiliation shouldn’t be a factor. They maintain that donors often have reasons other than party affiliation to contribute to a political candidate.
