McCollum Cedes GOP's Governor Nomination, No Endorsement Yet

August 26 -- Attorney General Bill McCollum has ceded the Republican gubernatorial nomination to former healthcare executive Rick Scott. However, it's going to take more than that for Scott to win McCollum's support in the November election.

Scott spent a record $50 million dollars to beat McCollum in a hard-fought primary. The Attorney General said Thursday he didn’t have the money to adequately respond to Scott’s attacks in the closing days.

Although the Republican establishment backed McCollum, leaders are starting to unite behind Scott. McCollum, though, still has misgivings about Scott’s past.

“Well, it’s going to be natural for a lot of leaders and the Legislative delegation and others to choose to support him. That’s their prerogative,” says McCollum. “I’m just giving you my reservations that I still have personally. I just haven’t met him and I don’t know him that well.”

McCollum wouldn't rule out an endorsement of Democrat Alex Sink, though he says they have policy differences. He said he might endorse multiple candidates, including Bud Chiles, independent candidate and son of former Governor Lawton Chiles.

For the time being, though, McCollum said he’s focused on his final four months as Attorney General.
