Florida Ranks 49th in Health Coverage for Low-Income Children

August 19, 2010 -- Florida officials today revealed that the state still lags in kids' health care coverage, even as families continue to lose private insurance due to the recession.

With Florida’s students returning to school, August is a big month for Florida KidCare, the federal-state health insurance program for low-income children.

At Thursday’s meeting of the Healthy Kids board, which oversees the program, Executive Director Rich Robleto praised the outreach efforts of state agencies and community partners.  However, he said, Florida still ranks 49th of 50 states in insuring children, with as many as 800,000 kids lacking coverage.

“So, 500,000, 800,000, [that’s] totally unacceptable,” said Robleto. “But at least it’s not getting worse.  It’s actually getting better.”

He said total Florida KidCare enrollment is now 1.9 million children, after nearly a quarter-million more children joined in the last year.
