Florida Doctors Consider Split With AMA Over Health Bill

August 12, 2010 - Some Florida physicians are angry at the American Medical Association for supporting President Obama's health care overhaul, and they say it's time for Florida's doctors to go their own way. At a meeting in Orlando this weekend, The Florida Medical Association will consider cutting ties with the AMA.

Ft. Myers plastic surgeon Douglas Stevens says he and many of his colleagues couldn’t believe it when the AMA endorsed President Obama’s health care plan.

“We really think that the American Medical Association supported something that we think is going to be horrible for the American public, for the American medical system, and we just don’t think that they negotiated in good faith on our behalf,” he said.

This weekend, at the Florida Medical Association's annual meeting in Orlando, Stevens plans to introduce a resolution to end the group's relationship with the AMA.  He won’t speculate about its chances of passing, but if it does, he thinks Florida doctors could join forces with other like-minded states to form a new lobby group.

The Texas Medical Association voted down a similar measure earlier this year.
