Desegregation Case Dismissed Against Orange County Schools

August 2, 2010 -- A federal judge says the Orange County School District is officially free of racial segregation. Monday's ruling settled a 1962 lawsuit against the district and ended almost fifty years of legal limbo.

Eight black families went to court in 1962 to challenge racial segregation and unequal treatment of African-Americans in Orange County schools. The suit was never resolved, and the district has been under court supervision ever since.

Earlier this year, however, the school board announced it had reached an agreement with the local NAACP and the families of the original plaintiffs. The settlement includes requirements for the district to recruit more minority teachers and speed up renovations at schools with high numbers of black students.

Presiding U.S. District Judge Anne Conway said she was not overly impressed with the agreement, but she agreed to dismiss the lawsuit since both sides were committed to a resolution.
