NASA Contractor to Lay Off Hundreds of Florida Space Workers

July 6, 2010 -- United Space Alliance says it will lay off 800-1,000 Florida space shuttle workers, effective October 1st. The company is shedding 15% of its shuttle workforce, as NASA prepares to retire the space shuttle fleet early next year.

USA is NASA’s main space shuttle contractor.  It currently employs more than 8,000 people in Florida, Texas, and Alabama.  Florida will be hit hardest in the current round of layoffs, but the company also plans to shed 300-400 people in Texas and about 10 people in Alabama.

The layoffs are not unexpected along Florida’s Space Coast.  There are only two more space shuttle flights left, with the final one scheduled for February.  Brevard County expects a total of about 9,000 Kennedy Space Center workers to loose their jobs as a result.  The ripple effect on other area businesses will likely bring the total number of Space Coast job losses to more than 23,000.
