Scientists Say Oil Might Be Heading for the Keys

May 17, 2010 - Marine researchers tracking the massive oil spill in the Gulf say some of the oil may already be headed south toward the Florida Keys.

The researchers, from the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science, say a computer model shows the oil has already entered the loop current. The loop is a powerful Gulf current that flows through the area where the blown-out well is located and could carry the oil south to sensitive coral reefs near the Florida Keys.
The computer models are based on weather, ocean current and oil spill data from the U.S. Navy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
