Orange County School Board to Discuss Budget

The Orange County School Board will hold a work session this afternoon to discuss a possible property tax hike to balance the budget. Board members are expected to propose an additional 25 cents per thousand dollars of assessed value.

Last year, the state legislature gave school boards the power to levy that tax for one year without approval from the voters
State lawmakers are still debating the amount of possible education funding cuts.
Orange County Schools Chief Financial Officer Rick Collins says the district has already lost millions in funding from the state.

“In fact, from the starting point of this year to where we are now, we’ve already lost about $92 dollars per student or the equivalent of a little over $15 million dollars.”

This comes when the district says it will need an additional $30 million dollars to comply with strict new class size caps in the fall.
The school board will also be discussing possible cuts to transportation services and other money saving measures.
