Grant to Fund Domestic Violence Education

A new grant will help train emergency responders in how to recognize the signs of domestic violence. A study from the University of Central Florida shows a 12-and-a-half percent jump in domestic violence incidents in Orange County last year.

The 110 thousand dollar grant will be used to teach police officers, firefighters and doctors what to look for if violence in the home is suspected.
The training will also be offered to teachers, clergy and employers.
Citing recent incidents of domestic violence in the workplace, Carol Wick, CEO of Harbor House, says everyone who might come in contact with a victim needs to know the signs of abuse.

“ Domestic violence is creeping into the workforce. And so, it’s not just about things that are happening behind closed doors at home anymore. It’s now happening more and more out in the community and endangering everyone.”

The grant, from the group “100 Women Strong”, was announced today at Orlando City Hall.
