Opening Day for State Legislative Session

March 2, 2010 -- The Florida legislative session gets underway today in Tallahassee, and lawmakers will be grappling with a potential budget deficit of more than $3 billion. Governor Charlie Crist will give his final State of the State address this evening to officially open the eight-week session.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House says one bill may be on its way to the governor’s desk before the end of the day. Speaker Larry Cretul says the House and Senate are both considering legislation today that would delay a massive increase in the unemployment compensation tax that’s levied on businesses.

The two-year delay would force the state to borrow more than $2 billion from the federal government to pay benefits to laid-off workers. Cretul says a final version of the bill could be ready before Governor Crist’s opening speech tonight at 6pm.
