$275 Million Sanford-Burnham Gift Help Advance Bio-Med Research In Orlando

The gift will launch implementation of a new 10-year strategic vision to accelerate the Institute's impact on improving human health.

The Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute says it’s received a 275-million dollar gift that will help advance biomedical research here in Central Florida.  Sanford-Burnham has a campus at Lake Nona and one in La Jolla, California. Both locations will benefit from the gift- which comes from a private, unnamed donor. Sanford-Burnham Vice President for External Relations Paul Baker says the gift is particularly exciting because it comes just as the institute approved a new, strategic vision aimed at strengthening research and drug discovery.

“We are again, just tremendously excited about this gift, it’s the largest gift in our 37 year history at Sanford-Burnham, any gift that exceeds a quarter of a billion dollars is certainly incredible,” he says.

Baker says philanthropers like the Sanford-Burnham donor are beginning to recognize that breakthroughs in human health begin with research, and so more private dollars are going to support research. Sanford-Burnham is a non-profit organization.
